Phin Filter

A Phin filter is a traditional Vietnam coffee brewing tool made of stainless steel or aluminum. It’s a small, portable drip brewer designed specifically for making Vietnam-style coffee (cà phê sữa đá). The phin sits directly on top of a cup or glass and consists of four main parts: Lid – Keeps the heat in during brewing. Filter chamber – Holds the ground coffee. Gravity press (or screw-down press) – Presses the grounds to ensure even extraction. Base/drip tray – Rests on the cup and allows the brewed coffee to drip through. Hot water is poured over medium-coarse ground coffee in the phin, and it slowly drips into the cup below. When brewed over sweetened condensed milk, it creates the iconic Vietnam iced coffee—strong, sweet, and deeply flavorful.
